Template Creation Guidelines

Follow these mandatory rules when creating content templates for DLT registration to ensure quick approval and high delivery rates.

1
Template Types

Templates must be classified as Transactional, Promotional, Service Implicit, or Service Explicit based on the message content and purpose.

2
Variable Format

Use {#var#} for dynamic variables (e.g., OTP, names, amounts). Variable placeholders must not be consecutive without static text between them.

3
Sender ID (Header)

Register a 6-character alphabetic header for transactional SMS or a 6-digit numeric header for promotional SMS. Each sender ID must be unique and traceable to your entity.

4
Consent Management

Maintain proper consent records of all recipients. For promotional messages, consent must be verifiable and comply with TRAI's consent framework (NCPR/DND checks).

5
Content Rules

Templates must not contain abusive, misleading, or deceptive content. URLs and phone numbers in the template must be whitelisted. All templates undergo operator-level review.

6
Scrubbing Process

Every SMS goes through a real-time content scrubbing process on the DLT platform that matches the sender ID, template, and content before allowing delivery to the end user.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about DLT registration, templates, and compliance for bulk SMS services in India.

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is a blockchain-based platform mandated by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) under TCCCPR 2018 to regulate commercial communications (Bulk SMS). All businesses must register on a DLT portal before sending promotional or transactional SMS messages to prevent spam and unsolicited communication.

No, you only need to register on one DLT portal. Once registered, your entity ID, headers, and templates are shared across all telecom operators through the distributed ledger network.

Entity registration typically takes 2-5 working days after document submission. Header registration takes 1-2 days and template approval takes 1-3 days. The entire process can be completed within a week with proper documentation.

SMS sent without proper DLT registration will be blocked by the telecom operators. The message will fail during the content scrubbing process where the sender ID, template, and content are verified against the DLT registry.
